Have you been considering training for a career as an Esthetician, but have some questions about it? Read our Esthetician FAQs to get all the answers you need to determine if a career as an Esthetician is for you!

What is an Esthetician?

An Esthetician is a skincare specialist that provides beauty services to individuals who are looking to enhance and improve the condition and feel of their skin.

What do Estheticians do?

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, estheticians give facials, full-body treatments, and may provide other skincare treatments such as peels, masks, or scrubs. Estheticians may perform some or all of the following duties¹:

  • Evaluate clients’ skin condition and appearance
  • Discuss available treatments and determine which products will improve clients’ skin quality
  • Remove unwanted hair, using wax, lasers, or other approved treatments
  • Clean the skin before applying makeup
  • Disinfect equipment and clean work areas
  • Recommend skincare products, such as cleansers, lotions, or creams
  • Teach and advise clients on how to apply makeup, and how to take care of their skin
  • Refer clients to another skincare specialist, such as a dermatologist, for serious skin problems

Where do Estheticians work?

Estheticians (once fully licensed) can obtain employment in many different workplaces, such as spa settings, salons, cruise ships, department stores, as representatives of product lines, and other settings.

Esthetician vs. Cosmetologist: What is the Difference?

There are very distinct differences between these two beauty professions. A Cosmetologist is someone who studies the application of various beauty treatments for hair, nails, and skin. Many cosmetology programs will focus primarily on cutting and styling hair, while providing students with a very basic education in other beauty skills, such as nail care, skincare, and make-up application.

An Esthetician is someone who specifically went to study and trained to care for and beautify the skin. An Esthetician does not cut or work with hair or nails, but cosmetologists do.

Esthetician and Cosmetology occupations carry separate (and different) licensure requirements, which is something to keep in mind when considering which beauty career may be the right one for you.

How can you become an Esthetician?

In order to become an Esthetician, students must complete the Esthetician diploma program and graduate. Graduates of the Esthetics program are eligible to take the licensing exam required for an Esthetician to become licensed and seek employment.
