Take the first step in your career journey today!
Tip 1: Start the First Night Right
The first night of cosmetology class is always exciting! Many times in the excitement and newness of it all, we forget some basic things that could help the experience go more smoothly. Follow these basic tips and you’ll be able to relax and focus on meeting your instructor and classmates.
A quick checklist will help with remembering the basics before the first night of classes:
- Something to write on
- Something to write with
- Directions to the campus
- A copy of the syllabus
- A copy of your class schedule
Once you have these basic items make sure you leave early if you are unfamiliar with the route or parking at the college. Start class right with success on the first night!
Tip 2: Caffeinate with Caution
Life can be busy and hectic outside of class at times. Often we will reach for a cup of coffee or an energy drink to help us ‘power through.’ We all want to do our best in class.
Caffeine is the primary wakefulness promoting chemical in these drinks. On average, the half-life of caffeine is 5 hours¹. That effectively means, if you drink a cup of coffee at 5 PM, half of the caffeine from that cup of coffee is still in your body at 10 PM.
Keep this in mind on the days when you feel like you need that extra cup of coffee. Drinking the coffee a little earlier in the day may help you sleep better that night. Avoid getting caught in the cycle of needing coffee to stay awake for class because you slept poorly, followed by another bad night’s sleep because you drank coffee later in the day.
Tip 3: Limit Blue Light at Night
You are finally done with your cosmetology training for the night. It is time to sleep; but, you can’t so you casually scroll through social media on your phone while Netflix is streaming on the TV. Science has shown that our sleep-wake cycles (circadian rhythm) are strongly influenced by blue light.
According to a study at Harvard, “Blue wavelengths—which are beneficial during daylight hours because they boost attention, reaction times, and mood—seem to be the most disruptive at night. And the proliferation of electronics with screens, as well as energy-efficient lighting, is increasing our exposure to blue wavelengths, especially after sundown².”
Try to avoid these light sources a minimum of one hour before you want to sleep. Many electronics come with a “Night Shift” mode that will automatically dim the screen and slowly shift the color away from blue colors. Think more Ruby Fusion and less Seafoam.
Tip 4: Clear Your Mind
You have already had a full day prior to showing up for class. It’s time to transition to ‘professional-in-training’ mode. Whatever other stresses or concerns you have, you are at school to maximize the professional, educational opportunity. Many things are important; but, how urgent are they?
If you have a lot on your mind and find it difficult to set things down mentally, try taking a few minutes before class and writing down the issues on your mind. You can revisit the list at a later time and manage the issues as you see fit. This exercise can help you to organize, clarify, and externalize your thoughts.
Tip 5: Have Professional Fun
Learning and perfecting techniques is only one part of training to join a professional community. The opportunity to form professional relationships is a valuable investment. The people around you may one day be your co-worker, employee, or boss. Build a peer network and support each other’s success throughout the duration of the program and beyond.
